La Playa

The story I have chosen to tell takes place in Bogota. Two days after arriving in Colombia life gave me an unexpected present. Riding the bus down Caracas Avenue, we passed 55th street. I looked over and saw a sea of mariachis and other musicians hanging around on the corner. I jumped off the bus and into “La Playa”. The more I came around, the more I felt the need to tell the stories of the men and women that have dedicated their lives to music and to creating happiness for other people.

“La Playa” is a dirty corner located on the biggest, ugliest avenue in Bogota. Musicians come from all over Colombia in search of work and better opportunities. This musical hub was formed during the 1960’s and grew over the years. As business increased into the 1990’s, the narcos took notice and drug dealers started infiltrating La Playa with cocaine, crack and other strong drugs. La Playa is full of music, parties and good times, but also tears, struggle and suffering. - MP
